Stacy Shen is a sophomore at Irvington High School in Fremont, Calif. She chose to draw two Ross’s geese for the Junior Duck Stamp Contest “because they have a simple snowy plumage which allows for both elegance and a dramatic contrast.” She has entered the Junior Duck Stamp Contest for the past four years and has been drawing since she was about seven. Aside from art, Shen is also passionate about music – more specifically, playing the piano. She says, “I have played the piano for ten years now and love how you can convey so many emotions with each note you play.” Shen is her class president and enjoys serving in other roles in which she can serve her school and community, like being a representative to the Fremont Board of Education. “I love devoting myself to service and hope to make a positive change in the world,” Shen says.

The Junior Duck Stamp is a pictorial stamp produced by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to recognize the conservation efforts of young people and support environmental and conservation education programs in the United States. The art competition is the culmination of students’ study of waterfowl and wetlands conservation in the classroom, homeschool, or non-formal education setting, often using the Junior Duck Stamp Program educational curriculum.
