What: The U.S. Postal Service teams up with Washington House Museum in Two Rivers, WI, for the issuing of the Soda Fountain Favorites stamps along with the unveiling of the new Pictorial Postmark Art. The stamps come in five illustrations: a double-scoop ice cream cone, an egg cream, a banana split, a root beer float, and a hot fudge sundae. The stamps will be on sale during the event and can be used on cards and letters, and then cancelled with the special postmark. Two Rivers, WI, is widely known as the home of the ice cream Sunday, ever since 1881 when Edward C. Berners, a business owner of a soda fountain and ice cream parlor prepared ice cream with chocolate syrup on it.

After the event, attendees are encouraged to take a tour of the Washington House Museum and sample the different Ice Cream Sundays available for purchase. Later, the Two Rivers Central Park Concert Series begins at 6:30pm  in Central Park.

Background: In 2016, the U.S. Postal Service celebrates soda fountain favorites — the cold, sweet treats beloved by people of all ages. This First-Class Mail® Forever booklet of 20 stamps features five different illustrations: a double-scoop ice cream cone, an egg cream, a banana split, a root beer float, and a hot fudge sundae. The geometric silver-toned patterns in the selvage and on the booklet cover evoke a classic chrome-accented soda fountain. The words “Soda Fountain Favorites” appear across the top of the booklet cover. Art director Ethel Kessler designed the stamps, with illustrations by Nancy Stahl.

As a community service, the Postal Service offers pictorial cancellations tocommemorate local events celebrated in communities throughout the nation. Those who cannot attend the event, but who wish to obtain the cancellation, may submit a mail order request.  Pictorial cancellations are available only for the dates indicated, and requests must be postmarked no later than 30 days following the requested pictorial cancellation date.
